Lower Ground Work Completed at Paradise Development

6 Dec 2017

Nolan Associates working with PCE Ltd have recently completed the lower ground and podium levels at Birmingham’s 17 acre Paradise Circus redevelopment project.

This allows the construction of One and Two Chamberlain Square to commence.

The upper level deck structure will provide the surrounding public realm areas around the buildings linking into the existing landscaping of Chamberlain Square and forming a link between the Square and Broad Street.

With a contract value approaching £5 million the design and build, two storey hybrid structural frame was a complex engineering challenge.

The programme was short requiring the offsite production of all lift and stair cores, columns, beams and floors. Peikko delta beams were used to achieve the heavily loaded, long spans with little or no down stands. The site access was extremely tight and therefore the production programme, erection process and material handling on site had to be carefully considered.

Centenary Way between the two future buildings which is a suspended slab over the car park levels below, was completed and open for the Christmas period as required.

The Paradise Birmingham website describes the project as the most important development outside London in the UK.

“Paradise will be one of the biggest development schemes Birmingham has seen for a generation and will dramatically transform this whole area of the city.”
